Rhythm Circle

Rhythm Circle is a series of holiday group classes designed to teach the basics of music to young children via musical games and activities.

About Rhythm Circle

I started Rhythm Circle to help young children learn the basics of music. Starting formal music lessons is difficult. Not only is there a new instrument to master but also new signs and symbols, and virtually a whole new ‘language’ to get used to. Most students struggle with rhythm and music notation in particular. The majority of this information is visual requiring prior knowledge of basic numeracy/ literacy and is usually taught with the children sitting still. However, children learn best using their whole bodies, with movement, and by play!

Rhythm Circle aims to teach the basics of music to young children who may not have grasped the basics of literacy or numeracy. These children can then can go on to begin formal music lessons with confidence. Via a series of progressive activities including musical games, drawing, listening, children are familiarised with basic music notation and develop listening and counting skills. The course is not specific to any one type of instrument and is designed to be a precursor to formal lessons later on.

FAQ

My child has started Reception but is not confident with numbers. Will he/she be able to cope?
Rhythm Circle activities are specially designed to help young children gain confidence in basic numeracy. Students will not need to have a fluent knowledge of the alphabet or counting in order to benefit and enjoy the sessions
How do I book lessons?
To reserve a place for your child, please contact Ms Wai Sum Chong either by phone 07890973173 or email at scry@rocketmail.com Payment can be made on the day. Please do not attend without prior reservation as you may have to be turned away on the day. In order to optimise learning, group sizes are kept small (4-6 students per session).
Must students attend every day of the course?
Each day’s activities are designed for students to be able to participate without having attended the previous session. However, it would ultimately be beneficial to attend all days since each day has a different focus for learning. In most cases, there will be a brief recap if the current activity is to build on what was learnt in the previous day.
Will these classes benefit my child who has already been having music lessons?
Formal music lessons can be very intense for a young child. Many find it difficult to absorb all the new information being given out at weekly lessons. Rhythm Circle aims to make the elements of music (rhythm, pitch, dynamics, articulation) more accessible by means of musical games and activities. These give students the chance to use their existing knowledge in a different context which builds confidence. For students who are already fairly confident but who find practicing a chore, Rhythm Circle provides a fun way of exploring music and consolidating their musical knowledge.
